Two decades of God’s providence
The St. Ignatius JSO Church is completing twenty years of its blessed existence in 2017. The church which was registered in 1995 has seen a lot of improvement and progress in the last two decades as a result of the able leadership of bishops, priests and deacons who were in charge of the church as well as the commitment and hard work of various lay leaders from time to time.
God has been gracious with the intercession of our patron saint St. Ignatius Elias III. The congregation now has 120 families. The progress of the church has been through purchase of land, construction of basement, construction of the present play school (which was then the church), parsonage, bishop’s suite, construction of the present church and hostel for bachelors and Kurishum Thotti (Cross). The church is registered under ‘St. Ignatius Trust, K. R. Puram’.
In a recent milestone, the holy relic of St. Ignatius Elias III was interred in a specially constructed relic room on February 20, 2016. The construction of the St. Ignatius Community Education Centre, a ground plus three building of close to 20,000 square feet area is complete and the church is now running a school up to UKG. Twenty families were added to the membership list in the past year and every single member of the church is contributing towards the growth of the church. The main thrust of the church is the spiritual progress of the members of the church and those residing near the church.
Towards this goal the relic room is providing a place for prayer and meditation while the St. Ignatius Community Education Centre will provide spiritual space for programmes, workshops and seminars, mission training, computer and language literacy and recreational facilities for people. As a gesture of respect and honour to one of the most illustrious priests of the Universal Syriac Orthodox Church, the ground floor of the St. Ignatius Community Centre was consecrated in the name of Arch Cor Episcopa Curian Kaniyamparambil last year, three months after his passing on from this world.
This is the first honour of its kind in the Malankara Church in the name of the well respected and remembered Arch Cor Episcopa. We consider this as God’s plan for the St. Ignatius JSO Church and have already seen the power and guidance of the relic of St. Ignatius Elias III in all the activities of the church. The St. Ignatius CEC will soon be fully operational with halls, class rooms, recreational and literacy centres and two badminton courts.
We hope to continue the good work started by others and hope to work for the glory and honour of the Kingdom of God in the coming years. We submit ourselves to the intercession of St. Mary, St. Ignatius Elias III, St. Gregorios and and all the blessed saints and seek the triune God’s blessings and protection in our life forward. May God bless us all.
Church History
A group of Jacobite Syrian Orthodox Church members originally from Kerala and residing in and around K R Puram began this congregation dedicated to His Holiness Late lamented Moran Mor Ignatius Elias III, the former Patriarch of Antioch and All the East, in the year 1994.
A few members of St. Mary’s J. S. O. Church, Queen’s Road expressed their desire to have a church at a convenient location that is closer to their houses before the then Vicar and Managing Committee of St. Mary's J S O church who wholeheartedly supported the idea. Since there was no premise of their own, they approached Sahayamatha Catholic church, Udayanagar, Bangalore to conduct the Holy Qurbana and were permitted to do so.
The first Holy Qurbana at the church happened on 9th October, 1994. As a result of the prayers of the faithful and the blessing of Lord Almighty, three plots of size 30' X 40' were purchased for the church and the foundation stone was laid on 28th April 1996 by the then diocesan metropolitan H. G. Thomas Mor Themotheos.
The building was constructed at great pace and the church was consecrated by H. G. on 16th February 1997.
